OUR TEAM

We are nine members strong from the Class of 2021 with a variety of backgrounds represented, aided by an amazing mentor and librarian.

Professor Jae Kun Shim is the Director of Neuromechanics Research Core at University of Maryland, College Park. He is a previous recipient of Young Scientist Awards of International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) and American Society of Biomechanics (ASB). His research is focused on neural and mechanical mechanisms of locomotion and hand and digit actions in health people and those with compromised neural and biomechanical systems such as stroke patients and lower extremity amputees. Dr. Shim's research has been supported by National Institute of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program (MIPS), Korea Research Foundation (KRF), Ministry of Welfare and Health of Korea, and other private and corporate partners.

Stephen Henry is Head of the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL). Henry has been with the University of Maryland Libraries since 2007. He began his tenure as Music Librarian, with responsibilities in reference, instruction, and collection development, and was appointed Head in 2015. Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, Henry was Assistant Music Librarian at the Theodore M. Finney Music Library at the University of Pittsburgh. He holds master's degrees in Library and Information Studies, and in Music Theory, both from the University of Wisconsin--Madison, and holds a B.A. in Music Theory from Youngstown State University in Ohio, where he also studied jazz and classical saxophone.

STEPHEN HENRY

Katie is a psychology major from Darnestown, Maryland. In addition to Gemstone, Katie is a member of a campaign in the Maryland Public Interest Research group hoping to end food insecurity on campus. Additionally, Katie is involved in Alpha Lambda Delta and the National Society of Leadership and Success, and is a volunteer at a therapeutic horseback riding center in Boyds, Maryland. Through research on Team METR, Katie hopes to learn more about risk factors affecting musicians' health and developing ideas for addressing these risk factors. Katie hopes to become a clinical psychologist after completing graduate school.

Katie is a bioengineering major from Frederick, MD. On campus, she is actively involved with the Biomedical Engineering Society, She's the First service organization, and the professional engineering sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon. She is looking forward to learning more about risk factors and possible prevention methods for disorders affecting musicians.

Divya is an Information Systems and Operations Management Major from Ellicott City, Maryland. Outside of Team METR, Divya is the Vice-President of Multimedia on Gemstone Student Council, the Performing Arts Director for Student Entertainment Events, and a Career Advising Intern at the Office of Career Services at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Through her team’s research, Divya is excited to apply her team’s findings regarding the bio-mechanics behind playing-related musculoskeletal disorders to make a difference in the area of musician’s health. Divya plans to continue her career in the field of entertainment, music, and technology upon graduation.

Luke is a junior Percussion Performance major from Salisbury, MD. In addition to Gemstone, he participates in the Marching band, Jazz band, and Wind and Symphony Orchestras. He is excited to participate in research that investigates music's effect on people.

Laura is a public health science major on a pre-dental track from Bethesda, Maryland. In addition to Gemstone, Laura is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society as well as Zeta Tau Alpha international women’s fraternity. Additionally, Laura has interned at two orthodontist offices in her hometown, and hopes to expand her experience throughout her undergraduate career leading up to Dental School. Through research on Team METR, Laura hopes to learn more about how musculoskeletal disorders affect musicians from an occupational context as well as new preventative methods to combat the disorders.

Hannah is a junior Computer Science major and Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation minor from St. Paul, MN.  In the future, she hopes to gain experience in the industry then start a nonprofit to encourage girls to join the computer science field. Outside of Gemstone, she is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Kairos Christian Fellowship. In addition, she serves as a mentor for Girls Excelling in Math and Science and on the Student Advisory Board of the new Inclusion and Diversity Initiative for the computer science department. She is excited to discover new information to help musicians and others who have musculoskeletal disorders.

Julianna is a junior Neurobiology and Physiology major and Music minor from Potomac, MD. In addition to Gemstone, Julianna is a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, a professional pre-med fraternity, Jewish Student Union, and the Gemstone Student Council. She is excited to be a part of team METR and see where this research leads.

Lauren is a psychology and dance double major, currently studying to enter the field of performance psychology. She is the co-president of an organization called Gift to Uplift which creates personalized children’s books for kids with long-term illnesses. Lauren is also involved in various productions with the dance department and volunteer work through the honorary dance fraternity, DCX. She is very excited to see how Team METR’s research on playing-related musculoskeletal disorders can help reduce musicians' pain and add prevention and treatment information to the research community.

Abigail is a psychology major pursuing a neuroscience minor. She is currently hoping to enter the field of clinical psychology. Outside of Gemstone, she is a member of the research team investigating the role of therapy skills on client's emotional reactivity and participates in volunteer work through the Food Recovery Network. She is one of Team METR’s editors and is excited to be a part of a research project with the potential to help those in need.
